That whole exchange takes maybe four seconds. It seems too small to matter.

Researchers call it serve and return, and it explains far more about a child’s later ability to learn, cope with stress, and form relationships than most parents realise.
What “Serve and Return” Actually Means
Think of it like a tennis rally, not a lecture.

- Return the serve. Respond with attention — words, expression, touch, or action. It doesn’t need to be elaborate.

What This Looks Like at Different Ages
Infants (0–1): Baby coos; you coo back and wait for a response. Baby stares at your face; you make expressions and narrate: “You’re looking at Mumma’s nose!”
Toddlers (1–3): Toddler holds up a shoe; instead of just taking it to help, say, “You want help with your shoe? Show me where it hurts to put on.”
Preschoolers (3–5): Child asks the tenth “why” question about rain. Resist the urge to say “just because.” Even a simple “Why do you think?” keeps the rally going and builds reasoning skills.
School-age (6–10): This is where serve-and-return gets underrated. A 9-year-old coming home and mentioning, almost offhand, that “some kids were mean at lunch” — that’s a serve. If you’re on your phone and say “hmm, okay,” the rally ends. If you put the phone down and ask “What happened?”, you keep the connection alive at exactly the age when kids start talking less.
The Screen Problem
Modern life has created a new obstacle to serve-and-return: the “still face” caused by phones. When a child serves — points, calls out, shows you a drawing — and the adult is looking at a screen, the rally breaks. Researchers who study parent-child interaction have found that phone use during shared time reduces both the quantity and quality of these exchanges, even when parents believe they’re only “half-distracted.”
You don’t have to eliminate phone use. But noticing when your child is actively serving — and choosing to return that specific bid before returning to your phone — makes a measurable difference over time.

You don’t need a special toy, an app, or a class to build your child’s brain architecture. You need to notice bids and return them, reliably, across ordinary moments:
- Answer the “why” questions, even the 15th one.
- When your child shows you something, actually look at it — not a glance, a real look.
- Narrate what you notice: “You built that all by yourself!”
- When you miss a serve — because you were cooking, on a call, exhausted — return to it later: “Tell me again what you were showing me earlier.”
- Let elders and older siblings in on it too; every responsive adult in a child’s life adds to this.
