Ages 3–5

The preschool years (3–5)

School readiness at this age is far more about confidence, focus, getting along and managing feelings than knowing the alphabet — and all of it is built through play, not worksheets. Here’s how to prepare your preschooler for school and life, without the pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What is school readiness, really?

It’s the mix of social, emotional, physical and thinking skills that help a child settle and learn at school — separating from you, focusing, following instructions, getting along with others and managing feelings. Academics matter far less than these at the start.

Should my preschooler be reading or writing?

Not yet, for most. Strong pre-skills — a love of books, storytelling, strong little hands, and letter play — matter far more than early formal reading or writing. Pushing academics too early often backfires.

How do I build my preschooler’s confidence?

Praise effort rather than cleverness, give real choices and small responsibilities, and let them struggle a little before you step in. Confidence grows from doing hard things, not from being told they’re clever.
