Does Your Phone Use Affect Your Child's Behaviour?

“Mumma, look, look, LOOK”
Your four-year-old says it three times before you glance up from the WhatsApp family group. You look up on the fourth “look.” He’s already moved on to something else. Nothing dramatic happened. No one got hurt. But that tiny lag — the gap between his bid for attention and your response — is exactly what researchers are now measuring, and it has a name: technoference.
Technoference isn’t about screen time for kids. It’s about your phone, interrupting the back-and-forth between you and your child. Researchers describe it as a term for how parent media use, like phone use, can interfere with parent–child relationships and interactions . It’s an uncomfortable topic precisely because it points the camera at the parent, not the child. But the research is specific enough now that it’s worth sitting with, rather than defending against.
What the “still-face on a phone” experiment actually shows
There’s a well-known developmental experiment called the still-face paradigm, where a mother plays normally with her baby, then suddenly goes blank-faced and unresponsive for a couple of minutes, then reunites. Babies protest, then withdraw. We’ve written about the original version and why it matters for why babies need your response.
Researchers adapted this for phones. In one version, mothers of 7- to 23-month-olds played freely with their infants for 5 minutes, then were asked to interact only with their phone for 2 minutes , before a one-minute reunion. The result: infant exploration was highest during the initial free play and decreased once the mother turned to her phone, with infants showing the typical protest and distress response seen in other still-face studies . A later study replicating this found the same pattern and added something practical: smartphone use during a free play episode can impair a mother’s responsiveness and teaching behaviour toward her child , not just her warmth.
This matters because that responsive back-and-forth is the same mechanism behind serve and return — the small daily moments where a child’s brain gets built through being answered. A phone doesn’t have to be used for hours to interrupt this. It has to interrupt the serve.
What happens when this repeats for months, not minutes
A single interrupted moment is not the concern. The concern is the pattern. In one of the founding studies on this topic, researchers followed 170 American families with toddlers (average age three) and used both parents’ reports to track this over time. They found that maternal and paternal problematic digital technology use predicted greater technoference in mother-child and father-child interactions, and maternal technoference then predicted both mothers’ and fathers’ reports of the child’s externalizing and internalizing behaviours — meaning more acting out, and more withdrawn, anxious behaviour. Published in Child Development, this is one of the most cited studies in the field (McDaniel & Radesky, 2018).
A companion longitudinal study by the same researchers, in Pediatric Research, looked at direction of effect. Heavy parent digital technology use has been associated with suboptimal parent–child interactions and internalizing or externalizing child behaviour, but the direction of that association was unclear going in — does the phone cause the behaviour, or does a harder child drive a parent to the phone for relief? This study investigated the longitudinal, bidirectional associations between parent technology use and child behaviour, and whether this was mediated by parenting stress (McDaniel & Radesky, 2018, Pediatric Research). The honest answer from this line of research: it runs both ways. A cranky, demanding toddler phase can push a tired parent toward the phone for relief; that phone use then makes the next interaction a little more strained. It’s a loop, not a one-way arrow — which is useful to know, because it means guilt is not the lever that breaks the loop. Changing the behaviour is.
Where the evidence gets genuinely messy
This is the part most articles skip, and it’s the part that matters most for not overreacting. A 2024 study asked a more surprising question: does checking your phone around your baby always predict less warmth? The answer was no. Higher frequencies of receiving audible notifications and checking mobile devices by parents when with their infants were statistically significantly associated with higher parental warmth, possibly because higher levels of connectedness to the outside world “spilled over” into more positive feelings about time spent with the child (Golden et al., ScienceDirect, 2024). A parent who feels supported by a WhatsApp group of other mothers, or reassured by a grandparent’s message, may bring more patience to the next hour with her child, not less.
The same paper is careful to add that this single surprising finding must be interpreted in the context of a range of negative developmental outcomes now associated with technoference . In other words: the frequency of picking up your phone is not the whole story. What matters more is what the phone is doing to your face and your responsiveness in the moment your child needs you. A separate study of attachment security in infants aged 11 to 26 months found the theorised link between technoference and weaker attachment, though the lack of parents’ emotional expression during technoference is thought to impede connection between parent and child and affect attachment rather than proven with certainty across all families. This is a young field. Treat any single number with suspicion — including ours.
What to actually do — and what not to bother with
Don’t aim for zero phone use around your child. That’s not realistic in an Indian household where the phone is also the boarding pass, the school circular, the doctor’s OPD number, and the only way your mother-in-law reaches you. The goal is narrower: protect specific windows, and repair fast when you slip.
Researchers who study this directly, writing for parents rather than other academics, land on something similarly modest. The research indicates at least small negative impacts of parent phone use during caregiving on parent responsiveness , and in interviews, parents describe real difficulty switching between their device and their child (McDaniel, ZERO TO THREE, 2020). That difficulty is the actual target — not the phone itself.

When you genuinely must take a call in front of your child, say this out loud, every time: “I need to take this for two minutes. I’m not ignoring you — when I finish, I’ll put the phone away and come back to you.” Then actually do it. Children as young as three can hold a two-minute wait if the wait has a stated end and the end is honoured. What breaks trust isn’t the interruption — it’s the interruption with no stated boundary, repeated daily.
The uncomfortable bit worth saying plainly
Your child is watching how you use your phone more closely than you use it.
